Growing up in a deeply rooted Jamaican family, I was always surrounded by wisdom passed down through generations. My elders didn’t need fancy explanations for things—they just knew. And one of the things they always emphasized was intuition.
There’s a Jamaican proverb I heard often: “Mi spirit cyan tek you.” If you’ve ever heard a Jamaican say that, you know exactly what it means. It’s that feeling deep inside when someone’s presence just doesn’t sit right with you. You may not have any concrete reason to feel that way, but your spirit knows. And let me tell you—your spirit is never wrong.
Over the years, I’ve learned that intuition is more than just a feeling; it’s a survival skill. Every single time I ignored mine, I regretted it. Whether it was a friendship that drained me, a job that didn’t align with my peace, or a situation that seemed off but I tried to rationalize—it always came back to bite me. On the flip side, the times I did listen to my gut, even when it didn’t make logical sense at the moment, I was always better off in the long run.
We live in a world that teaches us to seek evidence, logic, and proof before making decisions. But sometimes, your inner knowing is all the proof you need. The energy people carry, the vibes they bring, the way your body reacts around them—those are signals. And if something feels off, that’s reason enough to step back.
I’ve reached a place in my life where I no longer question my intuition. If my spirit tells me no, I listen. No explanations needed. No second-guessing. Because at the end of the day, my spirit has never led me astray.
So if you ever feel that uneasy feeling around someone or something, trust it. You don’t have to justify it to anyone. Your intuition is there to protect you—listen to it.
